There’s a plethora of phone plans on the market with many variables within each plan. To Compare phone service offerings, I collected product information on six popular phones and built a checklist of what to look for and what to avoid when selecting a phone service plan.

I used the brochure or website of six no-contract phone service providers: Boost Mobile, AT&T’s Go Phone, T-Mobile Prepaid, TracFone, Virgin Mobile, and Verizon Prepaid. There are other plans available.

Let’s start the elimination process

Open the brochure or go to the website of each phone service provider to examine the coverage area map. One provider I examined offered coverage information according to ZIP code. If where you live and will use the phone isn’t highlighted or identified as a serviced area with reliable reception, toss the brochure or close the site. That one’s not for you. People who live and work in Montana should be especially careful about selecting a phone. Two of the service providers had not a single smudge of coverage in “Big Sky Country.”
