According to a November 2009 article in Design News magazine by Charles Murray entitled, `"Could car batteries back up our electrical grid," electric cars might serve as a backup for our electrical grid. The cars could even charge themselves.

As confusing as it might be, this concept is being examined by auto companies, utilities, universities and industrial consultants. According to Murray many believe the electric car battery could turn out to be one of the most important sources of electric current for the electrical grid.

The Electrical Grid is Critical to American Society

Without electricity, modern society literally stops functioning except at a very basic level. The electric transmission grid is one of our nation’s nine critical infrastructure components as defined by President Clinton in Presidential Directive 63. In 2003 a multi-state electrical outage in the northeastern United States demonstrated just how critical this infrastructure component is to our country. Millions of dollars in damage resulted from this catastrophe. Everything from computers and cell phones to dishwashers and water treatment plants stopped working. Even systems with battery backup supplies were impacted by the long electrical outage.
