A three-way switch allows you to control a single light fixture or outlet from two different switches. Wiring a three-way switch will require some extra wiring and attention to detail, but when complete can create a very convenient solution. Areas where a three-way light switch are used include hallways and stairways when it is desirable to be able to turn the light on at the bottom of the stairs, then off at the top of the stairs.
Before beginning work on this or any electrical project make certain the power is turned off. This is best done at the breaker panel. Accidents or mistakes made with electricity can result in serious or even fatal injuries. Electrical modifications are best completed by a professional electrician or someone who is familiar with electricity and the various components involved.
Wiring the First Switch
For this application the power supply will feed into the first of the two switches. The power supply will be 120-volt single phase. The wire will contain three individual strands, a black, green, and white. (On the diagram the white wire is blue for emphasis.) The green wire may be a bare copper wire. In either instance this is the ground wire. The white wire is the neutral while the black wire is the hot wire.
